Life and Leadership

Life and leadership can look the same.  I believe the same principles you use as a leader, you should use in your personal life as well.

I want to share with you three leadership tips that allows you to look inside yourself and self correct.  I am currently attending the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit and I have been so inspired that I wanted to share some of the great information with you in the hopes that it inspires you as well.

Every session, I can’t wait to hear what will be said, so that I can figure out how to apply it to my life, business and leadership.  Cathy Hughes the founder of TV and Radio One has inspired me by her sheer tenasity to keep knocking on doors no matter how many of them closed on her.

Ursula Burns the CEO of Xerox is so down to earth and real.  Her mother instilled in her at an early age some great foundational wisdom.  She lost her mother when she was 25 but what her mother taught her has guided her life to this day.  It reminded me of my mother.

There are just a couple of the great women that I have had the pleasure of learning from this week.  It is a blessing and an honor to be here.

You Owe Them The Truth

You owe it to your employees to be truthful.  Too many managers hold back the details of employee poor performance and it’s unfair.  On one hand you say you care about your employees and on the other hand you don’t care enough to be honest to give them the information they need to improve.

No one ever gets better only hearing the good things all the time.  I believe in taking care of employees and recognizing them for great contribututions.  But I also care enough to share what they need to improve to give them the opportunity to grow.

10 Signs of Employees That are R.I.P. (Retired in Position)

How many employees do you have that have quit and stayed but did not tell you? Do you work in a graveyard? Meaning you are surrounded by employees that areR.I.P., Retired In Position. You might want to write this down, you cannot get dead people to follow you, unless you are in the Halloween movie and you are taping a scene.

I am not a horror film watcher. They scare me to much and maybe because of that, I don’t want to lead a group of retired in position employees, they scare me too. Here’s another note to write down, they kill your business.

As leaders, you know when you have employees that are not good workers and should not be there, but too often you make excuses for them. Today you will learn how to identify your R.I.P employees.

Here are ten signs to look for:

  1. They come to work and do just enough to get by
  2. They complete additional tasks only when asked
  3. They don’t take responsibility for their performance
  4. They complain about everything and anything
  5. They look for ways to cover their back
  6. They have an excuse for almost everything
  7. They are the last to get to work and the first to leave
  8. They are not open to new ways to do their job
  9. They look for people to agree with their complaints
  10. They have the “Dis” syndrome-disengaged, dissatisfied, distrustful, disgruntled, disconnected, discouraged, dishearten and they disagree.

So what do you do with these employees? You cannot continue to see the signs and do nothing. Would you drive down a street and see a sign that say, ROAD MISSING IN 100 FEET and keep driving or would you STOP, turn around and go in a different direction to get to your destination?

Follow the same steps with your employees.

  • Stop and address the behavior. It’s time to confront the issue.
  • Turnaround. Once you have addressed the issue you must ensure the employee turn their performance and behavior around. You need to see signs of the turnaround.
  • Go in a different direction. It’s time for you to lead differently. You have to take responsibility that the performance has existed because you allowed it.

Having having poor performing employees is a bad reflection of leadership. Your staff will lose respect for you, they lose trust and you lose credibility. You can’t produce exceptional team performance and results when your team will not follow you.

Today is the day of awakening.

You only need one leadership strategy to be successful

You only need one leadership strategy to be successful.  

PEOPLE

The only leadership strategy that you need is a people strategy. Every other strategy will mean nothing if you do not have the right people, the best people and skilled people to implement any strategy.

I have worked in retail management for over 18 years and learned that nothing is more important than people. No matter how good you are, if you have a team that does not follow your leadership, you are not as good as you think. We have all heard the saying, “work smarter not harder,” when you focus on getting results by taking care of your people, you are working smarter. If you don’t focus on taking care of your employees, I promise you are working a lot harder than you have to.

It drives me crazy to see managers that only focus on results and bypass the people who are responsible for helping you to achieve those results. I know how it feels to considered a result and not person, which is why it drives me crazy when I see it because I know what it feels like. Guess what? It’s not a good feeling.

Here is a simple plan that will help you with your most important strategy to improve performance and get results.

  1. Show appreciation: Take the time to let your employees know that you appreciate their hard work and their efforts. You will not believe how far a complement of encouragement will go and how much more the employee will be willing to do because of appreciation.
  2. Recognize small contributions: When you publicly or privately recognize your employees contribution, it will automatically lift morale and you gain trust. In today’s market, employees are doing the work of two people and sometimes three.
  3. Collaborate: When you involve your employees in the decision-making you gain more buy-in from them. You can tell them what to do but if you ask them what should be done, you will increase the productivity of that employee because they will work to prove that was the right decision since they were apart of it.

These are three simple actions for you as a manager to take that will pay you back ten fold in productivity. As leaders it is easy to get focused on reports, key performance indicators, spreadsheets, conference calls, action plans and on and on, but in all of that don’t forget about taking care of your people.

If you take care of them, they will take care of you.
